The following recommendations also apply to your mobile telephone when traveling abroad.
If you are using a 3G+/Wi-Fi tablet on a trip abroad, but you do not have an international DATA package, you should take steps to avoid being over-billed.
Even if you only plan on using wireless networks with your 3G+/Wi-Fi tablet through free hotspots, or airport or hotel Wi-Fi networks, your device may lose its wireless connection. When this happens, your device will automatically connect to the local provider's network if you have not removed your SIM card. This is when your data usage will start being charged based on your mobile telephone plan.
To avoid such unpleasant situations, remember to disable the roaming option.
On an IPad:
Tap Cellular Data, and turn off Data Roaming.
Scroll down, and disable Wi-Fi Assist. Usually, both IPhones and IPads favor Wi-Fi connections when they are available, but iOS9 has introduced a setting which enables applications to use 3G or 4Gs even when the device is connected to a wireless network.
On an Android tablet:
- From the home screen, tab Menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Wireless & Networks.
- Tap Mobile Network.
- Uncheck Data Roaming.
